Painted faces
November 12, 2008I had just been talking about face painting with Bubble~Trouble and today got an update from Guido with some pics from his 40th birthday party.
This rainbow butterfly shows the results of the rainbow pot from Clash of Kalamazoo.
Then, tonight, I came home and Orion asked me to paint his whole face brown: “Like Mace Windu“… and two of classmates, his teacher, and president-elect Obama!
However, he wasn’t too pleased with the results.
“It’s not smooth. I wanted it with no spots!” I mixed up a second batch of brown, but he still was not satisfied . “I wish I was born with brown skin.”
“Like Obama?” I asked.
“Like Barack Obama. And Tor. And Mace Windu. Mace Windu doesn’t have any hair.”
“Do you want me to cut off all your hair?”
“No, mommy would be mad.”
“You’re right.”
“In the name of the Galactic Senate of the Republic, you’re under arrest, Chancellor.“
Arts Walk Pie
October 3, 2008In spite of the weather I went out and offered Pie-in-the-face at Arts Walk. I needed to give the new nose a spin around the block, and I fancied that I’d pie “local comedian and artist, David Water” while he was decorating 4 foot tall letters that spelled A-R-T-S W-A-L-K.
Or perhaps local artist, Bil Fleming (who had successfully assigned a proxy for his pie at Performance Dishwashing).
Or perhaps local artist, Steven Suski, who conveniently avoided getting pied by avoiding my last birthday party. Since both Bil and Steve had work displayed at Olympia Salvage, we made that our first stop but didn’t see them. I dropped Orion off with Trish at Angel’s Thai and meandered over to the Martin.
David said that he was busy working and was “definitely not interested in a pie in the face”.
Fine. Sometimes he’s just so serious.
Okay, the make-up shows a sunburn from today’s weather.
Pieing Zander the Great
September 24, 2008I got invited to Terry Zander’s birthday celebration at Traditions Fair Trade Cafe last month. He wrote:
Food & libations will be provided
You are requested to provide the music, jokes, stories, and ?
Money will be given away.
I offered him a pie-in-the-face, and he agreed. One one condition:
“I hope you could do the pie thing close to 8, so I have time to clean up whatever mess is made without disrupting the party” NO PROBLEM
Since he was providing food, he especially wanted to get firm RSVPs. In fact, he sent such a flurry of e-mails concerning the details that I completely mistook the urgency of the message and showed up on Sunday, August 31st instead of Sunday, September 21st!
It was a two-digit Sunday that ended in a one!
With Trish and Orion in tow, we pulled up to Traditions near 8 PM and found the doors locked and the lights off. I asked her, “Isn’t it the 21st? The International Day of Peace?” She said, “It’s the THIRTY-FIRST.”
“Oh, well, I guess we’re early. … By a month.”
Luckily, Tommy “Pizza T” McKaughan was having his birthday party that night. I’ve already posted that picture.
By the time Terry’s actual party rolled around, Trish and Orion had made other plans. It was Gavin’s 5th birthday (at a bowling alley), and Trish had her GRE study class.
I got a ride from Tony, one of Terry’s son from Kelso. He’s a server at Red Lobster. He drives a Red Truck.
Terry had assigned seats. I sat down and opened up my face paints. My first customer was Kallie. Then she played a great set before leaving to play with her band Deaf Lester at Plenty. (Food and all that)

When it looked light the night was coming to a close I ran up and did a short act that included Indonesian cultural heritage material.
- Snowball the Spinning Pie-Rat
- Orangutan not Orangutang [The first means person of the forest, the second means person in debt!]
- Boleh Saya Minta Tolong Pinjam Sedikit Uang (May I Ask a Favor to Borrow a Little Money?)
- Juggling No Small Change Coins
- Flipping Fans [I did double flips as well (two hands simultaneously flipping)!]
- Juggling Fire
As I was introducing the idea of the pie as innocence, a blank slate, new beginning, etc. I was gesturing with the empty pie shell out the windows, and my phone rang.
Without even pausing, I answered, “Oh, nothing much… I’m JUST IN THE MIDDLE OF MY ACT!”
It was Trish, parked across the street, directly where I’d been gesturing. Orion had fallen asleep in the car. I put her on the speaker-phone everyone in the audience could say HI.
Okay, okay, do the pie and come home, right. I exited, stage left and filled the shell with whipped topping.
Terry told a joke about a bible-salesman with a speech impediment, and then I let him have it.

Did he give away money? He gave away Lotto tickets. When those were gone, he gave out dollar bills.
I gave out $4 bills.
Best of 2007
June 8, 2008Maybe I’ll redate this later, but things recently have put me in the mood to thank my lucky stars… or lucky charms… or trix or kix… or… the mercy of the cosmic giggle. *amen*
As April approached we had to look back as well. It was tax season. Since we were OWED money, we were not bound by the April 15th rule. Nevertheless, we looked back at 2007… and looked for deductions for several weeks until we actually filed with Joe Tax.
Then we began to look ahead to the return. Hmm, a turn he tot re-head… *phew~dizzy* Then we got the check.
Then we split it and spent it. Mine was converted to gold dollar coins.
and some small change.
Incredible shrinking dollar. Never underestimate the power of good cents.
To review and preview:
- In January of 2007 I took the Enterprise for Equity Business Readiness workshop. Now I’m poised to take the first ever E4E Summer Intensive, beginning in eight days.
- I was also switched from a substitute to a permanent employee with a retroactive pay raise. I was switched schools in March of 08. I’ve been informed of my ‘reasonable assurance’ of a position in fall.
- I took Paula Biggio’s workshop courtesy of the Big Foot Clown Alley and RNB’s Bobo Scholarship.
- I began serving coffee at the Oly UU. We signed the church book later that year. Trish joined the choir in 08. Orion attended Spirit Play. We all connected with friends and opportunities through the congregation.
- We paid many visits to Rusty Cock Ridge in 07-08, widening their circle of friends with our own.
- I had multiple clown bikes, and it’s time for a new one!
- Delivered my 1st pie on 4.1.07. I’ve delivered 24 in 08!
- Orion played his first team sport: soccer! And he agreed to do it again in 08!

- We went to Sasquatch Fest. Augh. We missed Bjork. We missed Mirah. We missed the Blow. We did stop at Dick and Jane’s spot and Roslyn.
- Trish went to the AMTA conventions.
- I got to go on a field trip to NW Trek for the first time.
- I got to work as a recovering Mad Scientist aka J.B.W.I., Justin Barnabas Wright, Inventor for Camp Invention, a week long experience leading a classroom of junior forensic scientists and inventors. Now I’m poised to sacrifice a 2nd time in order that I can take the E4E training.
- We went to Sherwood forest for the first time, and this time we may stay over the weekend of the 4th (missing two parades!).
- I attended my official 20th High School reunion, AND facilitated a kid-friendly BBQ the following day. Now mom’s yard needs emergency assistance again, and I’ve got to get money to Tony Bracco!
- I spent many hours with master gardener, Marci Sunshine, working her yard and painting her garage.
- I took a Sacred Clowning workshop in 07 and one in 08.
- I took a whole slew of autism workshops.
- We finally had a garage sale. We still need to purge and trade!
- We were visited by relatives from afar. Relatively, a farther.
- Jusby celebrated a lot of birthdays. At my new school a girl came up who recognized me from a party for her friend. She was a twin. She and her sister kept cutting in line, stepping on my lines, getting in my grill in other words. When it was face-painting time I gave them special treatment. When she saw me again in the classroom she asked,
“Why did you paint a C on my forehead?”
I replied, “Did I paint a D on your sister’s forehead?”
“Yes!”
“To tell you apart, of course!”
RCR pix from Mother’s Day
June 7, 2008On the eve of Father’s day, Orion and I went out to Rusty Cock Ridge to pick up our photos from mother’s day.
It was a quiet afternoon. We had Carolee all to ourselves for the better part of 3 hours. Orion had her for 47 minutes of it while I performed post-emergency clown counseling on the cell phone.
Lasts of May – pt 1
May 31, 2008We went to the TrendWest, WorldMark, etc. etc. time sharing seminar in Federal Way!
We spoke with Rex and pals for about 90 minutes.
We haggled. I wanted to buy two credits @ $1.96 ea. He wanted us to spend at least a hundred times that amount.
I explained it with my jumbo calculator. I typed 57718618 and turned it upside down so that it read BIGBILLS.
In the end we had connected on a situation that worked for both of us. We got the free trip voucher to Lake Tahoe, and he got to see the tail end of a clown departing in the rain.
Rex is the King. He even came back with his own camera… or the office camera.
This nice lady handed over the travel & food vouchers at the last window of the last door.
Romanteek and the locals
May 31, 2008After the juggling club, it was my turn to put Orion to bed.
Trish made a date with Sarah A to go out.
She came home around 3 AM. She’d been to Hall of the Woods and returned with a Romanteek CD and T-shirt for me. She’d gone on to Jake’s and the Clubside and the Eastside…
Next afternoon I’m wearing the T-shirt and thinking… “I wonder what kind of cheeseburger I can get at the Clubside? I seem to remember something about Kobe beef. Mmmm. And Trish knows the owner, Kenny.”
We arrive at 11:14. They won’t be ‘open’ until 11:30, so we stroll over to Orca books.

Trish recognizes the gal working there from Hall of the Woods. She’s dating the bassist from Romanteek. I show off the shirt.
I figure, “It’s payday. I deserve a treat BEFORE my treat of a cheeseburger, so I find a $5 copy of “Handbook for the magical party clown” by Don “the Clown” Sminkey
I make sure Trish has the KAOS member card for 10% off. The guy who rings me up was at the show too.
Then I order a jalepeno burger. Trish gets a veggie pepper cheese steak sandwich and fries. Kenny tells us that he refused to change the name even if there was no steak in it.

It’s so delicious! And a perfect portion too.
At the register Kenny lets us know that we can get the downtown business owner hook up for 10% off.
