Arts Walk Pie
October 3, 2008In spite of the weather I went out and offered Pie-in-the-face at Arts Walk. I needed to give the new nose a spin around the block, and I fancied that I’d pie “local comedian and artist, David Water” while he was decorating 4 foot tall letters that spelled A-R-T-S W-A-L-K.
Or perhaps local artist, Bil Fleming (who had successfully assigned a proxy for his pie at Performance Dishwashing).
Or perhaps local artist, Steven Suski, who conveniently avoided getting pied by avoiding my last birthday party. Since both Bil and Steve had work displayed at Olympia Salvage, we made that our first stop but didn’t see them. I dropped Orion off with Trish at Angel’s Thai and meandered over to the Martin.
David said that he was busy working and was “definitely not interested in a pie in the face”.
Fine. Sometimes he’s just so serious.
Okay, the make-up shows a sunburn from today’s weather.
Pieing Zander the Great
September 24, 2008I got invited to Terry Zander’s birthday celebration at Traditions Fair Trade Cafe last month. He wrote:
Food & libations will be provided
You are requested to provide the music, jokes, stories, and ?
Money will be given away.
I offered him a pie-in-the-face, and he agreed. One one condition:
“I hope you could do the pie thing close to 8, so I have time to clean up whatever mess is made without disrupting the party” NO PROBLEM
Since he was providing food, he especially wanted to get firm RSVPs. In fact, he sent such a flurry of e-mails concerning the details that I completely mistook the urgency of the message and showed up on Sunday, August 31st instead of Sunday, September 21st!
It was a two-digit Sunday that ended in a one!
With Trish and Orion in tow, we pulled up to Traditions near 8 PM and found the doors locked and the lights off. I asked her, “Isn’t it the 21st? The International Day of Peace?” She said, “It’s the THIRTY-FIRST.”
“Oh, well, I guess we’re early. … By a month.”
Luckily, Tommy “Pizza T” McKaughan was having his birthday party that night. I’ve already posted that picture.
By the time Terry’s actual party rolled around, Trish and Orion had made other plans. It was Gavin’s 5th birthday (at a bowling alley), and Trish had her GRE study class.
I got a ride from Tony, one of Terry’s son from Kelso. He’s a server at Red Lobster. He drives a Red Truck.
Terry had assigned seats. I sat down and opened up my face paints. My first customer was Kallie. Then she played a great set before leaving to play with her band Deaf Lester at Plenty. (Food and all that)
Kallie of Deaf Lester
When it looked light the night was coming to a close I ran up and did a short act that included Indonesian cultural heritage material.
- Snowball the Spinning Pie-Rat
- Orangutan not Orangutang [The first means person of the forest, the second means person in debt!]
- Boleh Saya Minta Tolong Pinjam Sedikit Uang (May I Ask a Favor to Borrow a Little Money?)
- Juggling No Small Change Coins
- Flipping Fans [I did double flips as well (two hands simultaneously flipping)!]
- Juggling Fire
As I was introducing the idea of the pie as innocence, a blank slate, new beginning, etc. I was gesturing with the empty pie shell out the windows, and my phone rang.
Without even pausing, I answered, “Oh, nothing much… I’m JUST IN THE MIDDLE OF MY ACT!”
It was Trish, parked across the street, directly where I’d been gesturing. Orion had fallen asleep in the car. I put her on the speaker-phone everyone in the audience could say HI.
Okay, okay, do the pie and come home, right. I exited, stage left and filled the shell with whipped topping.
Terry told a joke about a bible-salesman with a speech impediment, and then I let him have it.

Did he give away money? He gave away Lotto tickets. When those were gone, he gave out dollar bills.
I gave out $4 bills.
Romanteek and the locals
May 31, 2008After the juggling club, it was my turn to put Orion to bed.
Trish made a date with Sarah A to go out.
She came home around 3 AM. She’d been to Hall of the Woods and returned with a Romanteek CD and T-shirt for me. She’d gone on to Jake’s and the Clubside and the Eastside…
Next afternoon I’m wearing the T-shirt and thinking… “I wonder what kind of cheeseburger I can get at the Clubside? I seem to remember something about Kobe beef. Mmmm. And Trish knows the owner, Kenny.”
We arrive at 11:14. They won’t be ‘open’ until 11:30, so we stroll over to Orca books.

Trish recognizes the gal working there from Hall of the Woods. She’s dating the bassist from Romanteek. I show off the shirt.
I figure, “It’s payday. I deserve a treat BEFORE my treat of a cheeseburger, so I find a $5 copy of “Handbook for the magical party clown” by Don “the Clown” Sminkey
I make sure Trish has the KAOS member card for 10% off. The guy who rings me up was at the show too.
Then I order a jalepeno burger. Trish gets a veggie pepper cheese steak sandwich and fries. Kenny tells us that he refused to change the name even if there was no steak in it.

It’s so delicious! And a perfect portion too.
At the register Kenny lets us know that we can get the downtown business owner hook up for 10% off.

Jusby the Mom or Payaso Madre
May 11, 2008Happy Mother’s Day!
California Taco Truck on Harrison
They asked what I wanted. I said, “Chipotle!“
I ordered the Mexican Sausage Burrito instead and waved at the traffic while they cooked it. It was delicious. It took two sittings to finish.
Meet my little guy, Meredith. He never knew his birth mother. He’s adopted.
Orion turned 4
March 20, 2008As soon as he woke up, telling us “Hey, I turned four!”, we lit his candle and sang him the birthday song:
“Each of us rising from the Earth,
seeking love and wholeness from the moment of our birth,
may this coming year bring to you the gift of knowing love and a life that touches truth (x2)
Lai, lai, lai, lai, lai, lai (etc.)” /
followed by the more traditional “Happy birthday to you” and Trish’s rendition of the Beatle’s “Birthday”…
Making a wish
His new costume (From Wind Up Here)
He brought Lemon Poppy Seed muffins to school with him, half had raspberries too.
I went on a field trip to see Lazer Vaudeville, but my charge didn’t like it, and we left after 20 minutes. He said, “I don’t like shows with too much stuff!”
I’d been wanting to see the show for more than a year, and I loved the first 20 minutes. It had lots of black light puppetry, juggling, lasso tricks, and hat tricks. I’m inspired to learn more. It looks like the round topped bowler would actually be a better choice for hat tricks than the top hat. Also putting some color inside the hat makes sense if it’s going to be flying through the air.
After school we went to Farelli’s Wood Fire Pizza on Yelm Highway. He had a plain cheese pizza and a chocolate shake. He spent about a half an hour in the arcade section sans quarters “playing” games. Trish and I had the Wednesday special 12″ 2 toppings for $9.99, and each wanted different toppings on our half (spinach & sun dried tomatoes for her/ meatballs and sausage for me). Our server, Billy, said, “I’ll make it happen.” We also cashed in the gift certificate aunt Elaine in Mississippi had arranged with the manager over the phone. They don’t currently have certificates available on-line, but she made it happen!
Trish amused herself by keeping a secret from me. Some packages had arrived for me, but she wouldn’t tell me from whom. I guessed that one was the Conception Dollars and one was a card from SC [I recently fixed her website, saving her from a cease and desist order]. However, I was wrong on both counts. Remind me not to play poker with her.
It was two giant boxes of cookies from the East Coast. Our dear friend, Lisa, is planning to go into the custom cookie business, and she’d promised to send us some samples.
She’d asked what kind would Orion like. He replied, “Bubble gum”. She found some Bubble gum flavored jelly beans and mixed them into chocolate chip cookie dough.
I opened them and told him what they were and he flinched and turned away with an “Ewww!” The other cookies were “Choclate chip double peanutbutter swrill” [SIC]. They were delicious.
Then we watched Bee movie which had arrived via Netflix. Great message, totally appropriate for me looking for a way out of a typical hive job still.
Saturday, we’re having a Pirate Themed party at Tumwater Historical Park.
Invitation to the Pirate Party
Obsessed with chipotle…
March 16, 2008My colleagues at Madison decorated the break room for my going-away. There’s goodies on the table. The cheese dip does not have chipotle in it, but…
The Brewtus Burger I got with the Applebee’s gift card DOES!
Applebee’s Brewtus Steak Burger w/ Chipotle Mayo
Ten ounces of thick, juicy chopped sirloin burger topped with cheddar cheese and crispy Applewood smoked bacon and served on a toasted split-top bun. $9.99
Trish orders a salad.
Tender spinach, crisp bacon, roasted red peppers, red onions, toasted almonds and hot bacon vinaigrette—all topped with succulent shrimp.
Then, because she didn’t want any bacon she substituted a chili-lime vinaigrette dressing from the Weight Watchers menu. However, the salad itself had bacon all through it, so she sent it back and downsized to a half.
Orion has chicken strips and fries.
We finished it off with a hot fudge sundae ‘shooter’, served in a plastic kiddy cup, just pushing us over the top of the gift card.
Valentine’s Day (part 3)
February 23, 2008It was 9:30 pm, and we took Mimi Terry’s gift card and strolled into Cielo Blu. We weren’t sure if the kitchen was still open. The man said, “We’ll take care of you.”
Trish had gone in before and ordered a Pumpkin Pie martini. This time she wanted to try something else the bartender had mentioned. Something with balsamic vinegar!
He asked, “The Hibiscus Martini? Oh, yes. We have that. It has hibiscus nectar, the 500 year old balsamic and orange bitters.”
She said, “Oooo, I want one of those.” I ordered a grasshopper.
Valentine’s Day (part 2)
February 22, 2008Then swimming at Brigg’s. Trish went to exercise. Nick and I watched Orion in the activity pool.
Nick wore Trish’s goggles and a spare suit of mine.
Now we don’t know where her goggles are. She loved them so. They were my winter solstice gift.
Afterwards, Nick and Orion shared a pizza from Brewery City.
Nick had Olives and Mushrooms on his half. Orion had plain cheese!
Then we left them to have our romantic evening.
More local shoppin’
December 7, 2007Jusby hasn’t forgotten Traditions Fair Trade Café and World Folk Art!
He DID forget that Orca books is also a KAOS patron business, but since he didn’t buy any used books he wasn’t going to get a 10% discount anyway.
HOWEVER, if someone’s shopping for Jusby, they do have several used books on clowning and juggling you could get him ! [Hint-hint]
Jusby got his KAOS membership card by contributing $8.93 during Radio 8-Ball for the last “Fall Fun Drive”. And furthermore, he and Orion went over to the station last Tuesday and dropped off a CD of Andras Jones playing at Traditions from long ago.
If Andras needs any idea of a solstice present for Jusby, he could reciprocate by burning CDs of old shows from prior to 2006 – when Jusby first got that handy mp3 player! [hint-hint] Or maybe a Shmushkin CD!
Andy Shmushkin
Speaking of CDs, though, Rainy Day gives 10% off new albums, CDs and DVDs… the last NEW CD Jusby bought was that Bjork one before the tragedy of Sasquatch fest.
Other ideas -
Old School Pizzeria gives 15% any purchase over $5 (Jusby prefers the Sicilian Deep Dish and wears a Large T-shirt)(You’ll have to go there in person to buy anything though, the website only has the prices.)
Otto’s Bagels & Delicatessen gives 15% any purchase over $5 (Jusby prefers the jalepeño bagel with salmon cream cheese)(website?)
