Circus themed birthday
June 8, 2009I did my first double pieing the other night.
It was at the birthday of a twin, a gemini, but I didn’t pie her and her twin brother. I pied two girls who are dating, and they are both named Erin.
Mauren and her twin brother turned 33 (another symmetrical synchronicity!), and she decided to announce her party on #fcbk. Since she didn’t have a computer with internet at her house, creating the invitation fell to me. Since she had decided on a Circus theme I felt morally obligated to make the scene.
I convinced Heather “Honey” Duke to accompany me and assist with principal photography. heh.
Honey applies the bindi jewel to Maureen’s 3rd eye.
The birthday girl now sees all, and tells nothing. We gotta get her a red nose and clown character though, so she can start participating in the RNB alley events.
“Blaireau” did a great set with a street organ. He’s an actual French “organ grinder”.
This fellow wanted eyes like Siouxsie Sue. Sarah got a white dragon across the nose. How could I have forgotten to take a picture of the Temple kid who got a blue dragon?!
Glen had some great “chicken scratches” from prison.
The King of Olympia (in yellow pants) tried to pie me at one point, but I fended him off with my superior Clown Fu.
The two Erins. My first time doing a double shot.
Bil Fleming finally got his pie… a year in the making.
Before it got dark I got to show off my fan flipping to a beautifully costumed Dutch-Indo family. Who, of course, I didn’t get any pictures of… nor the other clowns! nor the half dozen weiner dogs in cute costumes! Oh, I was preoccupied. With pie-ing! Here’s ANOTHER double shot! Two men, one young and one not.
Tim “Big Mouth” the Ringmaster waited until sunset until he felt ready. Then the Little Prince seemed to want to get it too.
My second double shot EVER. Appropriate for the birthday party of a Gemini Twin.
Then the King set up a video projector and we watched UHF and Shakes the Clown projected on the side of Maureen’s house. Until the cops came.
Here was the epic fail of the night. After a flurry of twittering about inaugurating the new Organic pie-in-the-faces with a red 1/2 pint whipped cream dispenser delivered fast and cheap from e-bay…. it didn’t work.
The busted rubber gasket in my brand new whipped cream dispenser from e-bay. I wasted the first two NO2 cartridges before I realized it wasn’t keeping a seal. Sprayed Horizon Organic Heavy Cream and Agave syrup all over the dining room and Trish’s homework! The seller said “I don’t have spare parts. Call the company!”
The company website lists a spare gasket for $3, but they’re asking for $7 in shipping and handling. That would bring the total up where it would’ve been if I had bought the thing from Fred Meyer or the mall, but they didn’t have RED.
I’m checking locally with Espresso Parts to see if their gaskets are compatible. And I’m geeked to collaborate with them on a Barista Clown idea.
Absconded with Chuck’s hat at the end of the night. I’m keeping it hostage until my missing lucky spatula is found.
Lacey Spring Fun Fair and Beyond
May 16, 2009Lacey Spring Fun Fair at St. Martin’s University this weekend!
With my old friend, Officer Abernethy of the LSP (Lacey Senior Patrol). I said he was OLD! He’s a former WRC (Washington Reading Corps) tutor that I recruited for Lacey Elementary when I was an AmeriCorps*VISTA in 2001!
Orion riding the pony
Jusby and Honey riding the Circus Train (notice the Train Theme continuing?). We had to sit in the CAGE CAR! Probably since Honey had Hedwig the owl.
She first met Hedwig at the Seattle Value Village. He cost only 50c because he was slightly pinkish. Orion and I first met Hedwig whilst bartering with Honey over some great make-up and accessories. He was drying off in her bathtub and clean as ever! He’s actually a Folkmannis puppet. He’s got a reticulated head, and Honey did some marvelous Socratic dialogues with the children she encountered.
Clowns Unlimited ALWAYS sends their Circus Train and Multiple Bouncy Houses. Strangely, they NEVER send a clown!
The Red Nose Brigade 2009
Honey, Sprout, Professor Buzzy, Stormy, Marci Sunshine, Jusby, Little Bee Bop and Bean Sprout. Taken by Nita right before the parade started and right before Bubble~Trouble arrived with her guests.
After we leave Lacey, we’re hungry, so I suggest drive-thru. Orion agrees. We head for the Eastside Big Tom’s, of course.
At the freshly repainted Eastside Big Tom’s bartering tots for a publicity shot!

At the Hands on Children’s Museum, crashing Carbon’s 6th birthday for lemonade and fried chicken.
Carbon collected all the helium balloons and wants to recreate the new Pixar movie, UP!
Match Party Extraordinaire and the 101st pied face
April 22, 2009I got invited to the Big Brothers, Big Sisters Match Party Extraordinaire and promoted in the newsletter as “Jusby and Friends”. Bubble~Trouble accompanied me with her “Little Sister”, and Orion came along to take pictures. When we spotted the bouncy house I had to reassign Bubble to photo duty while Orion waited for and took his turns in the bouncy house.
I’d picked up the 50 Gallon Stanley rolling tool chest that I’d been coveting. It held everything I needed and then some, but it was simply too big for the Honda Accord, so I returned it. I liked having a table space for building pies and so on, but honestly…
Once I started offering free pie-in-the-face… I didn’t need any other clown supplies: face-painting, balloons, juggling, puppets, NOTHING!
My new giant pencil got used and appreciated. It especially worked well with the hatchet sharpener gag.
Successfully tore kids away from the bouncy house!
Which brings my total to 101 pied faces!
Reading at Relay 4 Life
June 30, 2008After a few rounds of golf in 90+ degree heat. I stopped in the shade to peek inside the cover of Clown Girl by Monica Drake.
Actually, I just finished Barbara Kingsolver’s Animal, Vegetable, Miracle…
Please do read it. For the discussion group, after all.
Best of 2007
June 8, 2008Maybe I’ll redate this later, but things recently have put me in the mood to thank my lucky stars… or lucky charms… or trix or kix… or… the mercy of the cosmic giggle. *amen*
As April approached we had to look back as well. It was tax season. Since we were OWED money, we were not bound by the April 15th rule. Nevertheless, we looked back at 2007… and looked for deductions for several weeks until we actually filed with Joe Tax.
Then we began to look ahead to the return. Hmm, a turn he tot re-head… *phew~dizzy* Then we got the check.
Then we split it and spent it. Mine was converted to gold dollar coins.
and some small change.
Incredible shrinking dollar. Never underestimate the power of good cents.
To review and preview:
- In January of 2007 I took the Enterprise for Equity Business Readiness workshop. Now I’m poised to take the first ever E4E Summer Intensive, beginning in eight days.
- I was also switched from a substitute to a permanent employee with a retroactive pay raise. I was switched schools in March of 08. I’ve been informed of my ‘reasonable assurance’ of a position in fall.
- I took Paula Biggio’s workshop courtesy of the Big Foot Clown Alley and RNB’s Bobo Scholarship.
- I began serving coffee at the Oly UU. We signed the church book later that year. Trish joined the choir in 08. Orion attended Spirit Play. We all connected with friends and opportunities through the congregation.
- We paid many visits to Rusty Cock Ridge in 07-08, widening their circle of friends with our own.
- I had multiple clown bikes, and it’s time for a new one!
- Delivered my 1st pie on 4.1.07. I’ve delivered 24 in 08!
- Orion played his first team sport: soccer! And he agreed to do it again in 08!

- We went to Sasquatch Fest. Augh. We missed Bjork. We missed Mirah. We missed the Blow. We did stop at Dick and Jane’s spot and Roslyn.
- Trish went to the AMTA conventions.
- I got to go on a field trip to NW Trek for the first time.
- I got to work as a recovering Mad Scientist aka J.B.W.I., Justin Barnabas Wright, Inventor for Camp Invention, a week long experience leading a classroom of junior forensic scientists and inventors. Now I’m poised to sacrifice a 2nd time in order that I can take the E4E training.
- We went to Sherwood forest for the first time, and this time we may stay over the weekend of the 4th (missing two parades!).
- I attended my official 20th High School reunion, AND facilitated a kid-friendly BBQ the following day. Now mom’s yard needs emergency assistance again, and I’ve got to get money to Tony Bracco!
- I spent many hours with master gardener, Marci Sunshine, working her yard and painting her garage.
- I took a Sacred Clowning workshop in 07 and one in 08.
- I took a whole slew of autism workshops.
- We finally had a garage sale. We still need to purge and trade!
- We were visited by relatives from afar. Relatively, a farther.
- Jusby celebrated a lot of birthdays. At my new school a girl came up who recognized me from a party for her friend. She was a twin. She and her sister kept cutting in line, stepping on my lines, getting in my grill in other words. When it was face-painting time I gave them special treatment. When she saw me again in the classroom she asked,
“Why did you paint a C on my forehead?”
I replied, “Did I paint a D on your sister’s forehead?”
“Yes!”
“To tell you apart, of course!”
