Other Radio 8 Ball revelations

June 27, 2009

toward the end of its run on KAOS I asked the Radio 8 Ball “What else can I fit on my plate?”

The answer by The Purrs was “The Dreams Our Stuff is made of.”  Then I checked out a book for Orion about the Tooth Fairy. It claimed that dreams came from tooth dust and therefore bad dreams came from sour teeth. The answer then seemed to indicate less emphasis on the plate but more on the teeth, in other words, flossing and brushing more regularly. In other words, finishing the tasks on the metaphorical plate down to the last ‘sugar bug’.

[and, as of last night, Orion has his first loose tooth, so we've got to figure out what the tooth fairy's policy is in this family]

Then, just recently, I called the AM 1150 KKNW Seattle version… thanks to my new Wi-Fi connection I could actually stream it!

Andras had “Amelie Julac” in the studio and was just finishing a phone reading with actor, Anthony Rapp.  I called and asked if I would find a bi-lingual (Spanish speaking) assistant for my gig on Sunday.

The answer was a song completely sung in FRENCH! “La Joie de Vie”

My interpretation was that I would probably rely on my own language and non-verbal communication skills, and it would be a beautiful thing any way.

Andras suggested that I go out dancing and scout suitable interpreters.

Amelie admitted that she didn’t really speak French.

Then I scouted on-line through my facebook clown/ juggler friends and found that Mish Kochac was available.  Not only did she have some Spanish ability but also Russian, Polish, Arabic and French!

To the would-be clown…

December 14, 2008

or “Shout outs to my Junior Joey’s in the house”…

I just replied to a myspacer in NEBRASKA [link to sandman lyrics] who would like to pursue clowning.

[EDIT:

CLICK TO LISTEN OR DOWNLOAD MP3 of my call to Radio 8 Ball as “JB DUDE” asking about clowning and getting Sandman’s live version of “Nebraska”]
#1 “What do you know now, that you wish you would have known when you first got into clowning?”
I first self-identified as a clown in 1996 (in my senior year of college), so my whole world has changed multiple times since then. “Pace yourself and keep the end in mind” might have been my advice. If I had known that clowning can be a full-time profession I would have sought out professional help sooner. I would have written a mission statement that would give me focus from year to year, gig to gig.

#2 “I love kids, they love me, and I am a funny person. But is that enough?”
Of course not. Kids don’t have money to hire a clown. Get moms to love you and pay you.

#3 “What is it that I can do to become a very good clown?”
It depends on what you already do and want. What’s your mission? Practice, Perform, and then Review. Get feedback. Join the Clowns of America International. Join clown-forum.com and chat with other clowns. Get a mentor.

#4 “What do I have to do to work for a circus?”
Start one! Audition for one. Go to clown school and/or join a local clown alley.

#5 “What all do street performing clowns do??”
Go find one! They are all different. What would you do if you were on the street for hours/ days/ weeks/ your whole life?

Okay, okay, I looked at your profile. You want to be a professional wrestler! Have you seen this guy? http://www.buffo.com/
Also, your interests spell it out: magic, stilts, ventriloquism, stand-up comedy, yo yo’s… put it all together and Viola!

Your next step if you choose to go down this road: Get in costume/ make-up and post yr pics! Bonus points: include at least one other person in the shot who seems to be enjoying themselves (watching your act, laughing at your jokes, applauding, etc.)
Make up a clown name and start a folder with stuff for him!

“Nebraska” came up on Radio 8 Ball for me ages ago (in 2007, I think). Chris Sand aka Sandman the Rappin Cowboy was the live musical guest. I called and said that I felt stuck as a clown between the worlds. The lyrics said (in part):

“There’s only one thing I know for sure, I ain’t in Nebraska anymore.”

[EDIT: CLICK TO LISTEN OR DOWNLOAD MP3 of my call to Radio 8 Ball as "JB DUDE" asking about clowning and getting Sandman's live version of "Nebraska"]

From that I had to say that what I knew for sure was that “I can be funny”. I asked much later if I would be in Sandman’s movie. That’s yet to be determined, but I did give him a pie-in-the-face with the cameras rolling!

But it all reminds me that I’ve asked so many more questions with great synchronistic answers than I’ve blogged, and one day Radio 8 Ball may be an HBO special even though it’s not on KAOS anymore. It reminds me that I took the KAOS training to be a DJ but haven’t finished the test or done the demo yet. Well, some New Year’s Resolutions are right around the corner here!

Tonight’s Karaoke Klown

July 18, 2008

I got this message:

“Justin,

We are starting up our live Karaoke show this Friday. I was wondering if you’d be interested in being a Karaoke Clown. I had an idea that if we really needed to get someone off the mic Jusby could run up and steal the mic and start singing the song. When this happens the singer’s been “Jusbied”. We would probably just set this up – not really gong anyone. We could also use a clown to entertain us during long “instrumental breaks” by dancing or ad-libing on the mic or something.

You don’t have to commit to all of the shows but I heard you on KAOS doing radio 8-ball or whatever it is called and loved it. Just thought I would find out if you are interested.

Robert”

http://www.myspace.com/karaokeoly

Well, it couldn’t have been Radio 8-Ball, as you’ve read. I was hilarious on “Hello, Olympia” though.

I’m excited about getting some screen time. I had planned on reserving the studio for myself to make a demo reel and start a “Clown O’ Clown” show, but this is much better.

He authorized me to ‘steal the mic!” Crooners, BEWARE! I’m packing PIE!

Show up at TCTV at 6:30 to sign up, and be ready to sing by 7.

A chapter closes on Radio 8 Ball

July 16, 2008

Last week I helped make the last episode of Radio 8 Ball on K.A.O.S. 89.3 FM.  In fact, I had the distinct honor of being the very last caller.

I asked, “Will the ladies hire me for the wedding shower/ bachelorette party?”  The answer, chosen from a random CD put on shuffle function, was John Mellencamp singing “Troubled Land”.

Let me back up.  Andras asked me to help by scribing, so he could concentrate on:

a) the sacred duties of performing the divination.  That is: shuffling CDs, pressing play, analyzing how a song can answer someone’s question about their life.
b) the mundane duties of operating a radio show.  That is: riding the faders, giving the station ID, reading community billboard/ entertainment calendar items, telling the time, etc.

My job was to write down the songs, artist, albums, and record labels for KAOs.  Then it turned out he needed me to write down the caller’s handle/ question and artist/ song for archival purposes.  My other job was to remain silent during the show, practice my miming.  Then, as a gag, I could go into the other room and call in my question.

Okay, fine.  “Troubled Land” didn’t give me much hope for the Wedding Shower.  It reflected the deeper issues of needing peace.  It turns out that I didn’t get the gig, AND I didn’t get to continue in my role as silent scribe on the show.

Fast forward a week.  I took the bus to Evergreen and went up to KAOS.  I met John Ford.  He asked, “What brings you here?”  I said, “Radio 8 Ball.”

He looked at me sadly and said, “There ain’t no Radio 8 Ball.”

Then I spoke with manager Jerry Drummond.  He let me know they’d ‘made a change’… the prior Thursday.

Then I spoke with Ruth Brownstein.  She invited me to attend the trainings to become a programmer myself.  The official reason for canceling the show was that Andras hosts a similar [read: identical in most respects] show on an AM station, and that conflicts with their mission statement of ‘serving under-represented voices’.  The unofficial reason deducted by an unofficial survey of listeners was: they just don’t like him.

The medium of Radio 8-Ball, whack!

April 9, 2008

I called in to Radio 8-Ball to ask what my theme song for this next year would be. Andras had 8 stacks of disks. I chose #4 for the 4th month, April. I must’ve been looking for something square.

I got an instrumental song, “Sweet Nothing”, the last track of “Nothing Sweet Nothing” by Kym Tuvim.. with a clarinet that reminded me of my old roommate who’s in jail now.

http://www.kymtuvim.com/audio/KYM_TUVIM-Sweet_Nothing.m3u (Broadband)

http://www.kymtuvim.com/audio/KYM_TUVIM-Sweet_Nothing-2.m3u (Dial-up)

Divination:

Andras: It was very light and optimistic. Very springy. Because there were no lyrics maybe you’ll become a mime.

Jusby: Maybe I’ll take a vipassana retreat, maybe. Oh, wait. I know. Sweet Nothings are PIES!

My iaudio mp3 player didn’t catch it, again, although I had a fresh battery and plenty of room. Two tech glitches in a day. Is Mercury retrograde again?

[update:

Subject: April Babies, Unite!

Body: Hey Justin,

Thanks so much for contacting me here!

…I hope the song that came through ‘landed’. It sounds like it did. I thought it was really fascinating about the whole ‘sweet nothing’ connection with your clowning work and the pies. But, then the idea of a more meditative year? Hmmm…

I will tell you something about that song that’s not readily apparent. Before it ended up on the record, it was a kind of pre-song for another song called ‘Birdsong’. It was originally written on my old back porch listening to the Starlings who used to live in the 70 year old laurel hedge that’s no longer there. It was a moment, if you know what I mean? But, when we went to record, it became it’s own song, evolving and standing on its own. When I perform live, I can’t help it and I still put them together, but on the record, it’s one of my favorite songs.

… I thought that might possibly be helpful information… ;-)

If you want to come up to Seattle for the cd release, it’s going to be on my birthday! April 20th at the Columbia City Theater. If you do, I hope you’ll say hello!! But, please no sweet nothings, okay? :-)

Take care,
Kym

8th Pie

April 1, 2008

Feeling a little post-pie depression, I went to the playground with Orion. I got to play with some kids and listen to Radio 8 Ball. I wondered if I would get another call or e-mail for a pie. I wondered if I should take matters into my own hands and go pie Andras during the show, but I’d been driving all day, so I just thought I’d wind down.

Sitting in the Depression

Then it finally occurred to me that I should let Orion deliver the last pie.

And I should receive it.

It is the 8th Pie of April Fool’s 2008

A couple of dreams

February 25, 2008

I had a dream about calling into Radio 8 Ball with Orion. We got a “song” that was 80.8 minutes long. It was very experimental and full of subtle ambient noise.

We went over to Andras’ apartment to get a copy of it. Andras met us and handed me a very old book, like Dante’s Inferno. It was open, and I was guessing that I should be looking for Canto 800, line 8 or something.

Andras’ apartment was much larger than his IRL apartment. He excused himself to go back to his exercycle on his patio.

michelino_danteandhispoem.jpg

[I just googled the phrase: Dante "Canto 800" and came up with

851.1 DANTE Dante Alighieri, 126 The Inferno of Dante
on this page http://www.lincc.lib.or.us/lf/lo-audio.txt which is the Clackamas County library network that includes the WEST LINN LIBRARY! Deeper research yields that 851.1 Dante also covers The Divine Comedy, 10 audio cassettes of 15 hrs or 9 CDs… The work is divided into three parts, Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso that total only 100 Cantos.  It begins on Good Friday.  Dante was 35.

Well, I’m a little older, almost 39, but Good Friday is coming up.  I’m thinking I should get these CDs.

I also had a dream this morning in which I was gathering together with other butoh critters for a performance.  I lived in a communal house adjacent to Evergreen.  doranne was there during the brainstorming of choreography.  Someone mentioned the image of canoeing or paddling some other kind of boat.

doranne said decisively, “no, a canoe, yes.”  and I suddenly could glide through the air as if paddling an invisible canoe about campus.

Kagami Reunion update

February 12, 2008

I dreamed I attended an Old Time Relijun concert. Then I shot the rapids with Arrington w/o a boat. We arrived in a deep area and noticed some huge fish with huge open mouths and lots of teeth. Arrington didn’t think they would be that sharp. He found out that he was wrong when one started biting him. I killed it with a knife. Then another appeared. Together we killed it.

Anyway, I haven’t heard from any out-of-staters whether the 2nd week in April will work for a reunion.

Maybe we should do it in the summer time. Maybe they can caravan from California… or ride the Green Tortoise up here. Read the rest of this entry »

Figure 8

January 30, 2008

I called Radio 8 Ball again tonight, as the 2nd to last caller, and mentioned that when you google: radio 8 ball, I’m the 8th hit. Andras checked it on the spot but didn’t see what I was talking about.

Then I asked, “How radical will the changes be at work this week?”

The song was “Figure 8″ (originally from Schoolhouse Rock) by Duplex (featuring Veda Hille) from the Album “Ablum”

duplex.jpg

The divination:

Me: Wow! We were just talking about the 8th hit for Radio 8 Ball and we get this song about 8! Also, it’s a Schoolhouse Rock song, and I work at a school. It’s about multiplication, and we’ve been doing that, I even specifically went over ‘two eights fell on the floor, picked ‘em up and they were 64′. It’s by Duplex, and I live in a duplex! Thinking about the skating and the weather, I wonder if things will freeze over and not much change will actually happen. Maybe a snow day. Maybe if I skate, I will be great.

Andras: The line that pops out for me is: “If you skate upon thin ice/ You’d be wise if you thought twice/ Before you made another single move”, so be careful and graceful. Plus it was first aired in 1973. Does that have any meaning for you?

Me: I was four in 1973, so that’s half of eight. [after the fact: that was when we moved west to Portland from Ann Arbor]

Andras: Some inner child stuff going on.

That bird has flown – Farewell, Cocolina. Farewell, Barbara.

January 28, 2008

Cocolina’s mom, Barbara, came over to pick her up for the MLK jr. weekend. They were either to say their good-byes or reconnect and figure out how to immigrate to Germany together. She seemed to be reluctant to

We would be staying in West Linn with Oma Barbara.

At my day job, we’ve recently had to seek the input of a district head honcho – named Barbara.

In the greater world, on the day we drove down to Oregon, a college student was abducted in Reno. She had been attending Santa Barbara City College.

sbfmango.jpg

In Oma Barbara’s fridge was a tub of Santa Barbara Mango Peach salsa, the sister company of Chachie’s. [I'm on my way to a new year's resolution of trying 12 salsas in 2008!]

All these connections led me to the wikipedia entry on Saint Barbara, the patron saint of lightning and now clearly a connection to the repetition of the word ‘Electrified’ in the song of the same name by Dressy Bessy I got when calling Radio 8 Ball to ask about whether we’d keep Cocolina.

Coco

January 16, 2008

Coco’s mom called Trish and will give us the opportunity to adopt her for the price of the cage.

We’d been birdsitting, and she’d been paying US $50 a month.

Hmmm. It was a question for the Radio 8 Ball.

Not There

January 3, 2008

On Tuesday, Dec 25th, I called the Radio 8 Ball again with the house full of family: Grampa Dave, Grama Julie, Oma Barbara, Bibi Betsy, Uncle Nick, Trish, Orion, and Jusby. I asked for a song that would have some significance for everyone in the house.

More local shoppin’

December 7, 2007

Jusby hasn’t forgotten Traditions Fair Trade Café and World Folk Art!

traditions.jpg

tradheader.gif

He DID forget that Orca books is also a KAOS patron business, but since he didn’t buy any used books he wasn’t going to get a 10% discount anyway.

HOWEVER, if someone’s shopping for Jusby, they do have several used books on clowning and juggling you could get him ! [Hint-hint]

Jusby got his KAOS membership card by contributing $8.93 during Radio 8-Ball for the last “Fall Fun Drive”. And furthermore, he and Orion went over to the station last Tuesday and dropped off a CD of Andras Jones playing at Traditions from long ago.

If Andras needs any idea of a solstice present for Jusby, he could reciprocate by burning CDs of old shows from prior to 2006 – when Jusby first got that handy mp3 player! [hint-hint] Or maybe a Shmushkin CD!

shmushkin.jpg

Andy Shmushkin

Speaking of CDs, though, Rainy Day gives 10% off new albums, CDs and DVDs… the last NEW CD Jusby bought was that Bjork one before the tragedy of Sasquatch fest.

Other ideas -

ospedit.jpg

Old School Pizzeria gives 15% any purchase over $5 (Jusby prefers the Sicilian Deep Dish and wears a Large T-shirt)(You’ll have to go there in person to buy anything though, the website only has the prices.)

Otto’s Bagels & Delicatessen gives 15% any purchase over $5 (Jusby prefers the jalepeño bagel with salmon cream cheese)(website?)

Paying Intention

November 14, 2007

Jusby called into Radio 8 Ball last week but not yesterday. Last week he asked “Which of these 8 blog topics should I write about next?”

Andras played a randomly selected CD on shuffle function.

The answer came in the form of this song:

artist_3728.jpg

“Before Departure” PJ HarveyFarewell my friends
Farewell my dear ones
Farewell this world
Forgive my weakness

Goodbye my friends
Goodbye to evening parties
Remember me
In the spring

To work for your bread
Soon you must leave
Remember your family
Work for your children

I don’t need much
And the older I become
I realize
My friendships

Lord carry me over
Any course of distance
Any cause of sorrow

My friends that last
Will dance one more time
With me
I don’t need much
This I need

The 8 topics were:

  1. AMTA- HEAD START [the day he performed twice]
  2. Bjork at Sasquatch [the show he missed due to a vomiting toddler; Tammi thought this might fit with the "sorrow"]
  3. Spina Bifida [see "Sitting Down on the Job" written because of the synchronistic arrival of those DVDs]
  4. Recycling [why co-mingled still doesn't solve it; Andras & Tammi suggested "goodbye my friends" might refer to the departure of the cans and bottles, etc.]
  5. Sacred Clowning/ Applaudville [why he chose to attend a workshop instead of perform for money]
  6. Washing Machine [when the mechanic said 'It's your transmission' and how Trish decided to switch to Soap Nuts]
  7. Halloween House [see "Halloween House Details"]
  8. Melt Your Face Gumbo [appropriate because of the "evening parties" reference; see "Melt Your Face Gumbo vs. Slop and Surf Gumbo" written because of the hunger for more gumbo]

Now Trish asks Jusby, “Did you type my Test on Bones, Joints and Muscles? Are you almost done?”

“Oh, crud,” thinks Jusby, “Farewell my friends… Remember me in the spring…”
