Dress Rehearsal

October 30, 2008

Jusby, Devilman, and Mike at the Halloween House on Thursday’s opening night/ dress rehearsal.

Jusby’s make-up is a new clown-lite variation. His Mad Hatter costume is missing the giant bow tie. He’s wearing a short sleeve button up over an Evergreen sweatshirt. Not pictured: Jusby’s polypropylene long underwear and the teacup full of bloody sugar cubes.

The music definitely helped. The playlist included:

Arrington de Dionyso “Breath of Fire”

the Januaries “Love Met the Devil”

Magnetic Fields “Save a Secret for the Moon”

Devics “Ghost”

the Knurlings “Cemetary Stomp”

Harvey Danger “Authenticity”

Hamlet Machine and Sponge “Spirit”

Mary Water “Headless Horseman”

Shocore “Bone Cracker”

Dennis Driscoll “Maureen Halloween”

the Actual Tigers “Standing By”

the Shaggs “It’s Halloween”

the Rondells “TV Zombie”

Diamanda Galas “I Put a Spell on You”

Joey Ramone “Spirit in my House”

Reverend Horton Heat “Halloween Dance”

and lots more! from the Dance O’ Dance mp3 archives.

I anticipate spending the majority of Halloween evening working the crowd from the front yard all the way to “the frightening Egress!” I’ll arrive at approximately 6:30 and depart at 10. Love to see you there!

Tonight’s Karaoke Klown

July 18, 2008

I got this message:

“Justin,

We are starting up our live Karaoke show this Friday. I was wondering if you’d be interested in being a Karaoke Clown. I had an idea that if we really needed to get someone off the mic Jusby could run up and steal the mic and start singing the song. When this happens the singer’s been “Jusbied”. We would probably just set this up – not really gong anyone. We could also use a clown to entertain us during long “instrumental breaks” by dancing or ad-libing on the mic or something.

You don’t have to commit to all of the shows but I heard you on KAOS doing radio 8-ball or whatever it is called and loved it. Just thought I would find out if you are interested.

Robert”

Well, it couldn’t have been Radio 8-Ball, as you’ve read. I was hilarious on “Hello, Olympia” though.

I’m excited about getting some screen time. I had planned on reserving the studio for myself to make a demo reel and start a “Clown O’ Clown” show, but this is much better.

He authorized me to ‘steal the mic!” Crooners, BEWARE! I’m packing PIE!

Show up at TCTV at 6:30 to sign up, and be ready to sing by 7.

Romanteek and the locals

May 31, 2008

After the juggling club, it was my turn to put Orion to bed.

Trish made a date with Sarah A to go out.

She came home around 3 AM.  She’d been to Hall of the Woods and returned with a Romanteek CD and T-shirt for me.  She’d gone on to Jake’s and the Clubside and the Eastside…

Next afternoon I’m wearing the T-shirt and thinking… “I wonder what kind of cheeseburger I can get at the Clubside?  I seem to remember something about Kobe beef.   Mmmm.  And Trish knows the owner, Kenny.”

We arrive at 11:14.  They won’t be ‘open’ until 11:30, so we stroll over to Orca books.

Trish recognizes the gal working there from Hall of the Woods.  She’s dating the bassist from Romanteek.  I show off the shirt.

I figure, “It’s payday.  I deserve a treat BEFORE my treat of a cheeseburger, so I find a $5 copy of “Handbook for the magical party clown” by Don “the Clown” Sminkey

I make sure Trish has the KAOS member card for 10% off.  The guy who rings me up was at the show too.

Then I order a jalepeno burger.  Trish gets a veggie pepper cheese steak sandwich and fries.  Kenny tells us that he refused to change the name even if there was no steak in it.

It’s so delicious!  And a perfect portion too.

At the register Kenny lets us know that we can get the downtown business owner hook up for 10% off.

The medium of Radio 8-Ball, whack!

April 9, 2008

I called in to Radio 8-Ball to ask what my theme song for this next year would be. Andras had 8 stacks of disks. I chose #4 for the 4th month, April. I must’ve been looking for something square.

I got an instrumental song, “Sweet Nothing”, the last track of “Nothing Sweet Nothing” by Kym Tuvim.. with a clarinet that reminded me of my old roommate who’s in jail now.

http://www.kymtuvim.com/audio/KYM_TUVIM-Sweet_Nothing.m3u (Broadband)

http://www.kymtuvim.com/audio/KYM_TUVIM-Sweet_Nothing-2.m3u (Dial-up)

Divination:

Andras: It was very light and optimistic. Very springy. Because there were no lyrics maybe you’ll become a mime.

Jusby: Maybe I’ll take a vipassana retreat, maybe. Oh, wait. I know. Sweet Nothings are PIES!

My iaudio mp3 player didn’t catch it, again, although I had a fresh battery and plenty of room. Two tech glitches in a day. Is Mercury retrograde again?

[update:

Subject: April Babies, Unite!

Body: Hey Justin,

Thanks so much for contacting me here!

…I hope the song that came through ‘landed’. It sounds like it did. I thought it was really fascinating about the whole ‘sweet nothing’ connection with your clowning work and the pies. But, then the idea of a more meditative year? Hmmm…

I will tell you something about that song that’s not readily apparent. Before it ended up on the record, it was a kind of pre-song for another song called ‘Birdsong’. It was originally written on my old back porch listening to the Starlings who used to live in the 70 year old laurel hedge that’s no longer there. It was a moment, if you know what I mean? But, when we went to record, it became it’s own song, evolving and standing on its own. When I perform live, I can’t help it and I still put them together, but on the record, it’s one of my favorite songs.

… I thought that might possibly be helpful information… ;-)

If you want to come up to Seattle for the cd release, it’s going to be on my birthday! April 20th at the Columbia City Theater. If you do, I hope you’ll say hello!! But, please no sweet nothings, okay? :-)

Take care,
Kym
