Honoring the mirror

January 12, 2008

In 1996 I saw the deep similarities between butoh dance and Poekoelan (Indonesian-American Kung Fu).

A few other Evergreen students explored both, but I pursued Poekoelan as far as I could. I was one of two top ranked students. Frankly, I was second in the class to Mitch Belote. His devotion was matchless. I, however, spent my other credits in the dance department and gradually more and more with doranne crable’s butoh troupe, Kagami (the Japanese word for mirror).

Laurie Meeker described Poekoelan as a ‘broken mirror system’. Each practitioner brought their own individuality to the style. The similarities (or synchronicities) continued right up until the end of my time with those teachers.

I often envisioned a meeting between the two groups.

Here are some notes from the last millennium, written with an actual typewriter on a recycled Dance O’ Dance flier in which I find parallel or complementary choreography for the ‘critters’ and the ‘practitioners’.

Baja and the Boss

October 10, 2007

Last night I tried out my new Speedo Baja Goggles at the Briggs Y. They made all the difference in the world.

bajagoggles.jpg

I had splurged and bought the most expensive goggles Fred Meyer had to offer (~$19) and scrimped on new headphones (~$4). The over-sized lenses and quick adjust strap cinched the deal. I only do underwater laps, so I appreciated being able to have more peripheral vision in case other swimmers entered my lane thinking it empty. One did just that yesterday.

However, I most enjoyed them when I joined Trish and Orion in the activity pool. Orion will now put his head underwater with his goggles and hold his breath for several seconds.

I taught him to have a tea party down there, miming eating cookies and drinking tea. He loved that and kept asking to do it!

He has been swimming with his kick board and roaming around the pool on tippy toes for several weeks now, but yesterday was the first time I actually saw him voluntarily go underneath the water.
It was also Tuesday night, so I listened to Radio 8-Ball until my question was answered. It was also Fall Pledge Drive at KAOS, and I had donated a couple of gift certificates as pledge premiums. I may wind up putting a pie in the face of Andras Jones if his co-host, Tammy T decides to redeem one of them. In order to call in my question for the week I decided to pledge $8.93 [in honor of their frequency 89.3 FM]. My question was: “Where will I be on Halloween?” The answer was in the form of the song “Last to Die” from the new Bruce Springsteen album Magic.

LAST TO DIE

We took the highway till the road went black
We’d marked, Truth Or Consequences on our map

A voice drifted up from the radio
And I thought of a voice from long ago

Who’ll be the last to die for a mistake
The last to die for a mistake
Whose blood will spill, whose heart will break
Who’ll be the last to die for a mistake

The kids asleep in the backseat
We’re just counting the miles, you and me
We don’t measure the blood we’ve drawn anymore
We just stack the bodies outside the door

Who’ll be the last to die for a mistake
The last to die for a mistake
Whose blood will spill, whose heart will break
Who’ll be the last to die for a mistake

The wise men were all fools, what to do

The sun sets in flames as the city burns
Another day gone down as the night turns
And I hold you here in my heart
As things fall apart

A downtown window flushed with light
“Faces of the dead at five” (faces of the dead at five)
Our martyr’s silent eyes
Petition the drivers as we pass by

Who’ll be the last to die for a mistake
The last to die for a mistake
Whose blood will spill, whose heart will break
Who’ll be the last to die

Who’ll be the last to die for a mistake
The last to die for a mistake
Darlin’ your tyrants and kings fall to the same fate
Strung up at your city gates
And you’re the last to die for a mistake

They suggested that I might be in L.A. for the live Radio 8 Ball Halloween show because it’s kind of like a game show, like the city of Truth or Consequences, NM which was named after a game show. I find that unlikely.

I might be surrounded by the dead. I might choose to protest the war(s).

Dress Up Day

April 23, 2006

Yesterday we had three main events: redo the floors, attend Corbyn’s 3rd birthday (Costume theme), and go to the St. Martin’s Luau (since many of Trish’s chair massage clients are part of the Hawaiian club).
The saga of the floors goes back about a year, I think. Trish REALLY wanted to remove the carpet and have laminate wood put in. She argued that the carpet was trapping mold and dust.

I argued that it was helping to trap HEAT and sound.

She negotiated with our landlord and made a tentative plan to get it done and deducted from our rent. Then he changed his mind and decided he would do it himself. Trish volunteered to help so she could learn. Since this was mainly her project my role was to be childcare: keep Orion out of harms way. We initially discussed doing both the living room and office but fortunately decided to do them on separate occasions.
We settled on the date over a month ago, and landlord Jeff confirmed by phone early yesterday morning. We had moved most of the furniture together, but as Trish had a morning massage I was left with the futon couch (to go in the dining room), the dining room set (to go outside), and the media center (to go in the dining room). I was also in charge of Orion care.
Orion has been making progress learning to use the potty. Since the weather was so warm I let him run around naked. If he says, “I need a new diaper” I offer to let him sit on the potty first.
All morning, no poop. We’re getting psyched up for the party by wearing our construction helmets. Naked construction worker ~ make a good calendar.

Landlord Jeff arrives. He’s wearing full fatigues and army boots. I resist the urge to salute. I resist the urge to shake his hand, cautious of his kung-fu grip, GI Jeff. I resist the urge to flash him the peace sign. Orion simply flashes him.
