Proud Sponsor of Oly Blogger of the Month

April 30, 2008

I replied to this thread on Oly Blog, calling for sponsors “to recognize (and reward) the individual contributions of an Olyblogger. “

I’m offering a “Special Visit” in exchange for an icon linking to my site.  They get more than 100K page loads a month.  I’m giddy that I’ve been breaking 1K page loads a month.  Well worth the $75 value.

Butoh Videos and Reunion Update

April 27, 2008

I met with Bruce Fogg at the downtown library and he feels the need to do something reunion-y. He knew doranne for 23 years! Mara West thinks she’ll have to pick up Kelly Coyle + kidlet on the way through Humboldt. Deborah Butler agrees that the end of June will work.

I’m thinking at least one lap around the track of Relay for Life and then either later Saturday night or sometime Sunday (June 28/29)

Chipotle Tortillas

April 21, 2008

My wife does love me. She does not love chipotle, but she knows that my dalliance with all things associated with this smoked jalapeño is completely innocent. And completely inane, but it keeps me out of bars.

We have gone many rounds over the types of tortillas we buy, however. She will not abide with the mainstream bleached white flour kind adulterated with poisonous partially hydrogenated fats!

I, however, have different standards.

I factor in a variety of issues:

  • cost per unit (I prefer a bag with more than 8 inside)
  • diameter (I prefer a 10″er)
  • thickness (this effects whether they crumble when toasted… I loathe a sloppy burrito)
  • and packaging (I prefer a zippered bag, tho I will transfer tortillas from their store bag to an adopted bag with a zipper if needed). Also inane, but keeps ‘em fresher!

When you’re stuck in a shopping rut you’ll run out of options. Each grocery store has a limited variety of brands it will stock. Since we usually shop at either Fred Meyer or the Oly Food Coop we usually see the same brands over and over again. Even though we sometimes will go to Safeway, Thriftway or Top Foods we still usually see the same main players.

Then she went to Mega Foods and brought home these Tumaro’s Chipotle Tortillas… bless her heart. They’re available on Amazon too! Click that sucka!

The Wiggles

April 21, 2008

Trish took Orion to see the Wiggles at the Tacoma dome for his birthday. We just got the pics Shannon took.

Look how close Orion got to the stage!

“The concepts of early childhood development and how young children learn influenced their songwriting, simple choreography, stage shows, videos, and television programmes. They believed that young children are egocentric, so they stared continually into the camera in their videos and TV shows, and explained every action because they believed that young children needed to be told what to expect in order to feel safe. Their stage shows were full of action and audience participation.[5] From the group’s inception, The Wiggles decided to

“operate from the premise that a young child has a short attention span, is curious about a limited number of objects and activities, loves having a job to do and is thrilled by mastering basic movements”.[5]

    Gabriel Parrish Parker

    Born: 1/24/75 in Portland

Missing: 9/17/95 in Grand Canyon; Found: 4/20/96

Gabriel had the gift of helpfulness. He cared about others–especially his Gramps, he was caring and compassionate. He was generous with his affections–never afraid to say “I love you”. We miss him so much.

Five Pied Faces and a Life Lesson

    April 20, 2008

Trish and Orion are inside with the other friends and family. Joe arrives back from his fool’s errand: “to get sugar”. He asks, “Where’s Justin?” Trish replies, “He had to work.” Awww.

    Ding-dong. Jusby’s at the door.

“Is this a birthday? I’m looking for a little girl, turning six years old. Where’s the birthday girl. I’m looking for a little girl named Joan Olan…”

“Oh, Joe Nolan! How old are you turning, little boy? SIXTY!? Well, I’m in town doing all the April birthdays, and wait a minute… There’s another Nolan… Elisabeth Nolan had a birthday ON the sixth, okay. And this guy here… When is your birthday, little boy? May? Well, I won’t be here then. It’s kind of a significant one, isn’t it? Eighteen. Yeah, I think you’re on the list for a pie too.”

Anybody else? Yup, this guy, Mark is an April birthday too.

His wife didn’t mind helping clean him up.

Speaking of wives. The lady of the house who approved the whole thing is right under here.

Grama Jill has a great sense of humor.

Her son, Adam, has a great sense of self-preservation, and a weapon.

His words of caution to Jusby, “Dude, I’ll ruin the vibe for hours. Seriously, don’t even try it. I have issues about the invasion of my personal space.”

Life Lesson: No means NO! and be prepared to do your own laundry when the pie starts to fly.

    West Linn Again

    April 18, 2008

Although his actual birthday is on Sunday… my ex step dad will be having a surprise 60th birthday party on Saturday.

    Hmmm. This calls for PIE!

    As promised, more pie shots

    The Excuse

    April 14, 2008

It was no surprise to me that when Duckhugger arrived at the party he’d brought his special Tarot deck. He’s been after me to play an ancient card game with them since ’06.

Apparently, before Tarot decks were used for pop fortune telling they were used for this game played by nobility.

In place of the Fool, this deck has The Excuse, ‘an un-numbered card that in some variations excuses the player from following suit or playing a trump, and in others acts as the strongest trump.’

In the Italian this card was called “Individual Foolishness” while the one we know as “The World” is called “Collective Foolishness”. It features multiple clowns that become military troops in the reverse.

One day, Duckhugger called the Radio 8-Ball to ask about spreading this game. In a way I found it the ultimate irony: music and cards had switched places as oracle.

Once upon a time (about 10 years ago), listening to the music on the radio was simply for entertainment while looking for meaning in a random assortment of cards was serious business.

It got me to thinking about the origins of oracle. Perhaps it had always been just fun. Thinking back to the first shaman that decided to share his thoughts about the cracks in the shoulder bones of an ox.

“C’mere, check this out! It looks like it’s going to rain this spring! (hee hee hee)”

    “Hey, you’re right. It does!”

“I am? Hmmm. And this line means it’s going to be dry in the summer! (hee hee hee).”

“Hey, everbody, check out what Jusby discovered! He can tell the future!”

Duckhugger said, “Well, of course, tea drinking pre-dates reading tea leaves.”

“Of course, first you gotta make some tea.  Then you gotta think of some crazy thing to say when you’re staring at the bottom of the empty cup.”

    Logo by Duckhugger

    April 13, 2008

Aerick finished inking his sketch later that night (4.11.08, my birthday, duh).  He wrote me to say that eventually he’d add color!

I told him that the hands behind gave me cognitive dissonance because they couldn’t physically be my hands, so maybe they are helper spirit hands awaiting my directions… or the hands of mischievous elves and the pies are intended for me.  Either way, it was well worth the wait.  I’ve been needing a logo.

Idiot Song, by Idiot Flesh [youtube]

    April 13, 2008

Several party goers got sucked into sharing their myspaces and watching archived videos during the party.

“You’ve got myspace on speed-dial!” said Heather

“Stop geeking out at the party”

Then she said, “Oh, you have to check out this video my friends made. It has clowns AND butoh!”

So, over the course of several hours, we waited for it to download.

Silly, dial-up, clicks are for vids.

    Ray and Adrien Pie Fight

    April 12, 2008

Rays says that he has never been a clown. But he has been a buffon, so he gave himself a hunchback, a hair wrap and a red nose and leaped around with the pie, engaging his son Adrien mano-y-mano.

Note the upturned pan of Italian Nachos.

Part two of the wish comes true.

Then Jusby chased Orion, but the li’l guy was just too fast!
