“The Evergreen community suffered a significant loss in July when doranne crable died. Her friends and relatives respect her wishes not to have a formal memorial on campus but also realize that our community needs to honor her passing and her life. We invite you to help celebrate doranne’s life by joining us for a screening of a very special film, Gypsy Caravan, which documents the music and spirit of a group of people from countries that doranne had been to or planned to visit in her never-ending quest for new experiences and knowledge. The films director had originally titled the film, When the road bends, tales of a gypsy caravan, that is derived from the Romani proverb about how to cope when life doesn’t deal you a straight hand. doranne had been looking forward to teaching in The Gypsy Road: A Study of the Roma this fall and was surrounded by books, music, and images as she prepared for her class during her treatments for lung cancer. Her love of dance, song, a passionate story, and a good laugh will be felt again as we watch this film together. Please reserve the afternoon of Saturday, November 17, 2007 beginning at noon for the Olympia premiere of Gypsy Caravan (a film still in theatrical release). The film will be shown at Capitol Theater (206 5th Avenue S.E.), followed by a reception hosted by doranne’s family from 2:30-4:30 at the Heritage Room (604 Water Street, next to the Water Street Café). “
That’s the official story… Dance Party (Kagami Reunion) to happen next spring on or around her birthday.
Jusby got the email on the 10th. It had been forwarded several times. Neither the movie nor reception made it onto his calendar. Then his planner went missing for several days… under the bed. Orion’s pal, Isaiah, is celebrating his 5th birthday today from 3 to 5. Trish is working until 3:15.
Last night during “Crude Awakening” Jusby’s cell phone rang. It was Mara West (writer/director of “Pairadice” and “the Sundowner”) calling from California to ask about the memorial/ reception.
She had written a sonnet. Jusby offers to read it at the memorial. She declines. He suggests that she record it and email it over right away. He’ll play it on his car stereo for selected listeners. She declines. She suggests that it will be part of the spring performance.
She has other ideas about the spring performance: base it on Parzival (the Wolfram von Eschenbach version that became Wagner’s Parsifal) and the Wind in the Willows, and a butoh fake magic show, and on and on they build ideas culminating in a dance party at the Washington Center.
Mara wrote the sonnet by hand, calligraphy style but hasn’t typed yet. She writes everything by hand as part of her training to become a Waldorf teacher. She’s also learning to juggle! Jusby encouraged her and shared the secret of fake 4 and 5 object juggling.
Mara also had a request: “Go get a red rose and a white rose and tie them together with some ribbon. Bring them to the reception.” Then she took another call. When she called Jusby back she had news, “It’s on! I just talked with Katy Fogg. She’s up for the performance.” We’ve also heard from Gabe Raley, Deborah Butler, and Quata Cody.
This morning, after they dropped Trish off at her office, Jusby and Orion had a little adventure at the Fred Meyer which concluded with the purchase of two roses.
Here’s a bonus synchronicity… thanks to wikipedia you can see a connection between Waldorf education and PARSIFAL (Prevention of Allergy—Risk Factors for Sensitization Related to Farming and Anthroposophic Lifestyle). Mara, we looked into your head!
By the way, both “Pairadice” and “the Sundowner” featured Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn.
